Behind the Mud: Let the Clay Decide the Mecha Morph<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Every now and then, it\u2019s incredibly grounding to dig back through the studio archives and look at pieces that pushed our boundaries. Looking back to November 2019, I remember sitting at the workbench with a fresh cylinder of wet clay and a desire to try something a bit different: a highly sculptural cup with massive, exaggerated features that broke away from flat surfaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of a standard illustration, I wanted to see what would happen if I put the two most iconic rival mechas\u2014the RX-78-2 Gundam<\/strong> and the MS-06F Zaku II<\/strong>\u2014onto a single, continuous wraparound canvas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They aren’t locked in a traditional battle scene. Instead, this piece became an exercise in mechanical morphing\u2014and the most enjoyable part of the process was that I didn\u2019t plan a single bit of it in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

An Unplanned Evolution on the Wheel and Workbench<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

A lot of people assume that complex mecha designs require rigid, blueprinted blueprints before tool ever touches clay. But for this piece, the design process wasn’t executed from a strict drawing; it simply came out as I worked the clay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I started with a thick, heavy-walled cylinder to give myself plenty of material to dig into. As I sat there with my loop tools, the piece began to dictate its own rules.<\/p>\n\n\n
