With my earlier mecha pieces, I focused heavily on the mobile suits themselves\u2014letting their giant features morph and dominate the entire surface. But with this mug, I hit a turning point: I realized the importance of adding a background scene to give the figures a true sense of place, scale, and story.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This time, I wanted an undeniable battle scene. class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Just like my previous experimental mecha cups, the primary forms weren&#8217;t heavily pre-planned. I sat down with my loop tools and let the characters emerge naturally from the leather-hard surface.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of hacking away massive chunks of clay, I kept the relief carving cleaner and more streamlined. On one side, the <strong>RX-78-2 Gundam<\/strong> stands tall with its iconic shield raised. As you turn the mug past the handle\u2014which acts as a perfect, natural divider for the composition\u2014you find the green <strong>Zaku II<\/strong> hunkered down, mono-eye glowing and ready for the clash.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bringing in the Background Scene<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The real breakthrough with this piece was using the empty space around the mobile suits to establish an environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of leaving the background as a blank ceramic void, I carved subtle textures into the clay to represent a rugged, mountainous landscape. When it came time for the glaze room, this layout completely transformed the storytelling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">I leaned into a fluid, painterly underglaze style, using the background to establish a moody, atmospheric narrative:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>The Sky:<\/strong> A deep, dramatic cobalt blue blankets the upper rim, shifting down into a smoky, twilight haze.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>The Wilderness:<\/strong> Behind the mobile suits, I hand-painted dark, silhouetted evergreen trees and jagged mountain ridges, while the handle itself was blended with earthy gradients to mimic a rocky cliffside cutting through the forest.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suddenly, the mechas weren&#8217;t just floating shapes on a cup; they were standing in a living, breathing world.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Behind the Mud: Building a Battle in the Background As you spend more time with the wheel and the carving tools, you start to realize that what you leave flat matters just as much as what you carve.
