I first watched Laputa – Castle in the Sky during my university days, sometime in the late ’80s. I had it on VHS and would watch it again and again in my small apartment. It was one of those movies that really stuck with me—the story, the visuals, the flying robots, the floating castle. I couldn’t get enough of it.
Recently, while going through a stack of old sketchbooks, I found some pencil drawings I did back then—dated 1987 and 1988. They were scenes from Laputa. I must’ve sketched them right after watching the movie, probably late at night when I should’ve been studying. I didn’t even remember I had kept them.
Seeing those drawings now brings back a lot of memories—not just of the film itself, but of that time in my life. It’s a reminder of how much this movie inspired me early on, and how long it’s been a part of my creative journey.
