There is so much rich lore surrounding the dragon. While this magnificent, magical being takes on vastly different personalities and characteristics in Eastern and Western mythology, there is one undeniable commonality: its fearsome, raw power. Dragons have been portrayed by countless artists and great storytellers throughout history, which left me wondering—how do I approach my own expression of such an epic creature on something as intimate and curved as a mug?
After several iterations of sketches and brainstorming on paper, I decided to narrow my focus to the attributes that stand out the most. Rather than a roaring beast, I wanted to portray a quiet moment that reveals a deep, proud, and powerful expression. I wanted to capture its fearless heart in a state of stillness.
I ultimately chose to depict a dragon that is awake, yet resting. The design focuses intimately on the eye and part of the face, partially concealed by the magnificent, sweeping scales of its coiled body.
It is by no means perfect, but as my very first attempt at bringing a dragon to life on a ceramic mug, I am incredibly happy with the result.
